What is an electric unicycle?

An electric unicycle (aka monowheel) is a type of personal electric vehicle (PEV) designed for single-passenger use. As the name suggests, it has a single wheel and is powered by an electric motor. Riders stand on pedals located on either side of the wheel and control the movement and balance using their body movements.

Here are some key features and characteristics of an electric unicycle:

  • Electric motor: The unicycle is equipped with an electric motor that provides propulsion and helps the rider move forward or backward.
  • Self-balancing technology: Most electric unicycles are equipped with sophisticated self-balancing technology, similar to that used in self-balancing hoverboards or Segways. This technology enables the unicycle to maintain its balance while in use.
  • Battery: The unicycle is powered by a rechargeable battery, typically lithium-ion, which provides the energy needed to drive the electric motor and power the control board and lights.
  • Controls: Riders control the speed and direction of the electric unicycle by shifting their weight and using built-in sensors that detect the rider’s movements.
  • Tyres: A variety of tyres are utilised on different models, majority of models have a street tread and are between 2.125 and 3″ wide. Knobby offroad tyres are also used by some models to provide better traction for riding in offroad conditions like grass, dirt, mud, gravel etc.
  • Suspension: A newer development trend on electric unicycles is the use of either air or spring suspension shock absorbers. This allows for better comfort when riding on bumpy terrain, or impact absorption when landing from height over a jump.
  • Portability: Electric unicycles are often designed to be relatively compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry and transport when not in use. There are larger sized units designed for longer range riding, and those models often have their own kickstands
  • Learning curve: Riding an electric unicycle can be challenging for beginners, as it requires a certain level of balance and coordination. However, with practice, most riders can become proficient in riding them.
  • Range and speed: The range of an electric unicycle depends on the battery capacity and other factors but typically ranges from 20 to 200 kilometers. Maximum possible speeds varies between models, with entry level electric unicycles able to travel speeds up to 20kmph, and other higher performance models able to reach a potential max speed of 90kmph or even higher.

Electric unicycles are becoming popular among urban commuters and individuals seeking an efficient and eco-friendly means of personal transportation. They offer a fun and futuristic way to travel short distances, particularly in crowded urban areas where traditional transportation can be less practical. However, like all personal electric vehicles, it is essential to follow local regulations and safety guidelines while using electric unicycles. It is a good idea to wear appropriate safety gear such as helmets, knee pads, and wrist guards when riding one.
