KingSong X1-Max scooter review after 4 weeks / ~200km in Perth

TL;DR: a good quality, powerful and fast scooter, excellent bang for buck, slightly let down by a ropey mobile app and occasionally stuttery cruise control. One firmware / app update away from greatness. Highly recommended anyway.

    The Great:
Grunt: can propel 98 kilos of me up a freeway over-bridge ramp with ease. Tons of fun.
Speed: hits 38kmh (GPS verified) easily and stays there. Feels like it could go faster, but appears top end is still limited even if “Unlimited Speed” and 60kmh max mode speed is chosen in the app.
Speed & power does not fade even at 20% battery level.
Powerful drum brake – much better than the usual cable disc brakes
    Surprisingly powerful and usable E-brake
    Thick, chunky handlebar grips
    Excellent high mounted headlight
Spare bolts and tyre valve extension provided in the box
Price – well below similarly specced machines

    The Good:
    Build quality and strength
Big, chunky deck and grippy pad
    Grippy wheels and comfortable ride
    Nice 2 colour display
    Chunky stem lock
    Not too heavy.
Unusually accurate for a scooter speedometer
Lots of adjustment options via the app (if you can translate them!)

    The Mediocre
Although it has a nominally big battery, the available power means that it doesn’t last as long as you’d imagine. The advertised 70km range might be OK for a midget riding at 15km/h, but a moderate sized person using all of the available performance would be looking at real-world 20 – 30km at most (still pretty good).
Boring black design, ripping off Ninebot with the yellow highlights.
    Rear light relatively dim.
    Non removable or foldable handlebars
Small black-on-black one button control (1 tap for lights, 2 taps for speed mode, 3 taps for display options) is fiddly and hard to use when in motion.
Kick to start take-off is odd, as throttle must be pushed down slightly AFTER the start speed is achieved, leads to a few muffed take-offs which can be a scare when crossing busy roads if you’re used to push throttle>kick>go of most scooters.

    The Bad
Terrible mobile app. It does work, but is riddled with Italian, Chinese and Chinglish machine translation errors. Also has repeatedly misidentified my scooter as a Uniwheel and tried to upload a Uniwheel firmware update which could be disastrous. Crying out for a polish and bug fix.
Over-enthusiastic cruise control often makes the throttle and e-brake fight themselves – not dangerously, but gives a pulsing ride that is unsettling and slightly uncomfortable. Not managed to find a sweet spot on the options to smooth it out. Again, one firmware update would fix this.
